Great Lake Taupo“The key to a great holiday in Taupo is to allow more than just one day to do it.”
Lake Taupo, New Zealand’s largest freshwater lake, is located in the Central Plateau of the North Island and truly one of New Zealand’s most beautiful regions to explore.
Commonly referred to as ‘adventure central’, there are a myriad of activities and day trips from your holiday accommodation, from a leisurely stroll or bike ride along the picturesque lakefront to an exhilarating skydive or bungy jump.
The historic geothermal activity has provided Taupo with a wonderful diverse landscape. So if you’re wondering what to do in Taupo we’ll never run out of ideas. The majestic volcanic mountains at the southern end of the lake make a picture-perfect backdrop to the crystal-clear blue waters.
Lake Taupo is a great place to stay if you have a passion for the water. Kayak to the Maori Rock Carvings or cruise the lake on a vintage steamer or eco-friendly sailing yacht. For the more adventurous, take a jet boat ride to the mighty Huka Falls or up the Aratiatia Rapids. You can even hire self-drive boats, go waterskiing or parasail along the lakefront from picturesque heights. If you’re a keen angler what better way to spend a day in the renowned trout fishing capital of the world than to go fishing on Lake Taupo or fly fishing in the many rivers.
Taupo’s surrounding bush and forests offer many mountain bike tracks which are shared by those of us who prefer to enjoy the outdoors at a more leisurely pace. No matter what your fitness level, there is a walk for you. In and around the township you can walk from Spa Park to Huka Falls, following the Waikato River, enjoy the Lions Walk along the lake’s edge from Two Mile Bay to Five Mile Bay, walk through the Craters of the Moon in the thermal park or enjoy walks in the Opepe and Kaimanawa Forests. New Zealand’s best one-day walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, is less than 1 ½ hours’ drive south from your Taupo holiday accommodation. The walk is simply magic but being reasonably fit makes it all the more enjoyable.
If you stay long enough to include a day trip, Taupo is ideally situated for visits to the Tongariro National Park, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay and Waitomo.
